he Connect Me: Connecting Our Communities Grant Scheme initiative is helping the lives of Jersey residents. By providing grants of up to £5,000 for projects that promote participation in arts and physical activities, the scheme is helping to build a more connected and healthier community.

Since its start in 2022, the scheme has supported 106 different projects, making a significant impact across the island. The additional 46 grants for 2024 promise to continue this positive trend, ensuring that more Islanders can benefit from the opportunities to connect, create, and thrive.

World Homeless Day & The Shelter Trust

World Homeless Day is observed internationally on the 10th of October. A day used to draw attention to the needs of those who experience homelessness and to provide opportunities for the community to get involved in responding to homelessness, something which many islanders may think isn’t an issue here in Jersey.  Yet every night The Shelter Trust provides accommodation, food, support, and encouragement for around 125 people across their eight sites.

Building Stronger Communities: Releasing Better Neighbours

In an era where rehabilitation and reintegration are gaining more traction as effective methods to reduce recidivism, initiatives like the “Releasing Better Neighbours” programme at HMP La Moye are paving the way for a more constructive approach to incarceration. Prisoners are encouraged to address offending behaviour through the programme which was inspired by the Seven Pillars of Recovery research conducted by prisoners in Norway.

Thanks to receiving a grant from the Connect Me: Connecting our Communities Grant Scheme, The Jersey Youth Choir has been able to minimise costs to its participants so that money isn’t a barrier for those interested in getting involved.

Squashing barriers in participation…

Every Saturday morning, large numbers of enthusiastic youngsters gather at the squash courts in St Clement’s ready to develop their skills and play with, and against, their peers. These young people are members of the Jersey Squash Academy and are amongst the 20 million people who play squash regularly world-wide in over 185 countries.
