Public spaces are where community life happens. From markets and sports fields to town squares and coastal paths, they bring people together, support health and wellbeing, and shape the experience of living in and visiting Jersey.
But many of these spaces need care and renewal. Our central markets require modernisation, a number of our sports facilities need to be upgraded, and St Helier – the Island’s capital – needs to be greener, more accessible, and more welcoming. Investing in these areas is not just about buildings or infrastructure; it’s about community pride, quality of life, and creating an Island where people want to spend time.
A Stronger, Greener Town Centre
St Helier is at the heart of Island life, but too many areas feel tired or under-used. By investing in regeneration, we can make the town centre a place that works better for everyone – residents, visitors, and businesses alike – and align with the strategic goals of our Future-Fit Retail Roadmap and Visitor Economy Strategy.
Key to this will be refurbishing the Central and Fish Markets, turning them into vibrant destinations for shopping, dining, and socialising. These iconic buildings deserve to remain at the centre of community life, but they also need to meet modern expectations for accessibility, energy efficiency, and visitor experience.
We will also work with the Parish of St Helier and community representatives to make the town centre greener, safer, and easier to navigate, with improvements to public spaces, walking routes, and access for families, older Islanders, and people with disabilities.
Sports Facilities for Today and Tomorrow
Sport is a cornerstone of community life, supporting physical health, mental wellbeing, and social connection. Yet many of our facilities are ageing and no longer meet the needs of today’s athletes or the wider community.
Through Investing in Jersey, we will upgrade and expand sports facilities across the Island. This includes:
- Regenerating Les Quennevais Sports Centre and FB Fields, bringing them up to modern standards.
- Creating new facilities at Le Rocquier, designed to serve both community needs and athlete development.
- Preparing for the 2035 Island Games, ensuring Jersey has the facilities to host international visitors while leaving a lasting legacy for local people.
These investments will not only support elite athletes but also make it easier for Islanders of all ages to take part in sport, from grassroots clubs to casual recreation.
Spaces that Support Everyday Life
Beyond sports and markets, public spaces play a role in every part of Island life. Car parking in St Helier will be improved to support access for shoppers and visitors, while public squares, parks, and leisure areas will be made safer, cleaner, and more welcoming.
By investing in these areas, we are investing in the places where Islanders gather, where culture and creativity thrive, and where the Island’s identity is celebrated.
A Community Legacy
The Jersey Capital Investment Fund gives us the ability to commit to these projects for the long term. They won’t all be delivered overnight – but with steady, reliable investment, we can renew the spaces that matter most to our community.
This is about more than infrastructure. It’s about making Jersey a place where people feel proud of their surroundings, where visitors experience a warm welcome, and where future generations inherit spaces that inspire connection, health, and happiness.
Investing in public spaces is investing in the soul of the Island – ensuring Jersey remains not only a safe and successful place to live, but a vibrant and enjoyable one too.
