There’s something special about being out on the water — the rhythm of the oars, the breeze in your hair, and the sense of achievement with every stroke. But for many in Jersey, trying out rowing has often felt out of reach. That’s where the Jersey Rowing Club, supported by funding from Connect Me, is making a real difference.
A New Way to “Have a Go”
Each year, the Jersey Rowing Club hosts a series of ‘Have-a-Go-Row’ weekends, offering adults of all ages and abilities the chance to experience rowing first-hand. Thanks to support through the Connect Me Grant, the Club has been able to expand these events — giving even more islanders the opportunity to get on the water, try something new, and stay active.
The sessions include coaching from experienced rowers, time out on the bay in four-person boats, and a chance to connect with Jersey’s incredible natural environment in a whole new way.
“Rowing can seem like an exclusive sport — the equipment, the training, even knowing where to start,” said a Club representative. “Our Have-a-Go-Row sessions are about breaking down those barriers. It’s about opening the doors, and letting people discover what they’re capable of.”
Built for Everyone
One of the things that makes this project truly special is its inclusivity. Rowing is a sport that can be adapted to suit all kinds of physical abilities and fitness levels. Whether you’re looking for a fun community activity or aiming for high-performance competition, there’s a place for you at the Jersey Rowing Club.
With a wide range of equipment available to members — and passionate volunteers on hand to offer support — the Club has created a welcoming space where everyone can find their stride (or stroke!) at their own pace.
“Our members range from young adults to those who’ve taken up the sport later in life,” they explained. “Everyone is welcome, and that’s something we’re really proud of.”
Looking to the Future
In the short term, the Club’s goal is simple: get more people out onto the water, enjoying the sport, and building their confidence. In the long term, the hope is that these Have-a-Go-Row sessions will inspire a new generation of rowers — securing the future of the Club and ensuring that Jersey’s community rowing spirit stays strong.
Even for those who might not continue rowing regularly, the experience leaves a lasting impression.
“Even if someone only comes once, they’ll have a new appreciation for the skill, teamwork, and beauty involved in rowing,” they said. “When they see boats out on the bay, they’ll know what it feels like to be part of it.”
Creating Opportunities, One Stroke at a Time
Living on an island, opportunities to engage with the sea are part of what makes Jersey unique. By making rowing more accessible, the Jersey Rowing Club is helping more people forge a deeper connection with the water — and with each other.
With the help of the Connect Me Grant, the Club is not just teaching a sport. They’re building confidence, creating friendships, and inspiring a community to stay active, adventurous, and connected to the island they call home.
Connect Me: Connecting our Community
The Connect Me: connecting our communities grant scheme is an initiative to provide opportunities for Jersey residents to take part in cultural and physical activities.
Grants of up to £5,000 are available for projects which will increase opportunities for Islanders to participate in artistic or physical activities.
The scheme aims to engage Islanders in community activities to:
- promote a sense of connection
- prevent loneliness
- enhance both physical health and overall wellbeing
Find out about the Elemental service
