Taking Care of Jersey’s Health

Serving more than just meals. Meet Thyme Out West’s Halil Metushev

HOW a passion for catering and customer service drives Halil Metushev’s role in the heart of Jersey’s new healthcare facilities.

The Enid Quenault Health and Wellbeing Centre stands as the first milestone in a transformative project reshaping healthcare across Jersey. The former Les Quennevais School was repurposed and opened in September 2023, it houses clinics formerly operated at Overdale and has become established as a medical and popular community hub in the west of the Island.

As the physical transformation continues to develop, it is people like Hallil Metushev who make the Enid Quenault Centre truly come to life.

Halil, a Catering Assistant at the popular Thyme Out West Café, shares how he found his place in public service and the joy he gains from his role.

“I’ve been passionate about food ever since I moved to Jersey,” Halil says. “With nine years of experience as a head chef, I’ve always loved creating meals that bring people together. So, when the opportunity came up to work for the Government of Jersey, I was thrilled to continue doing what I love, but with the added benefit of serving both patients and staff.”

His role allows him to bring his expertise in food management, health and safety, and customer service to the table every day. “A typical day for me involves prepping the counter, stocking up on drinks, sandwiches, wraps, and salads, and making sure the hot food displays are ready. We serve around 250 bowls of soup, 250 rounds of sandwiches, 160 wraps, 200 freshly baked pastries, 60 jacket potatoes, and 800 hot drinks each week,” he explains.

But it’s the personal connection with customers that Halil finds most rewarding. Working in a self-service café doesn’t stop him from going the extra mile to help customers, especially those who are elderly or in wheelchairs. “I’m always happy to offer assistance by taking their orders and bringing food to their tables. It’s the little things that make a difference.”

Being part of a team, Halil says, is key to delivering a top-notch experience. “Teamwork is essential. It helps me communicate with my colleagues, and ultimately, it improves the service we provide. Our relationships with other departments at the Enid Quenault Centre make it all come together.”

Whether it’s a familiar face or a new visitor, Halil takes pride in meeting their needs. “Nothing makes me happier than putting a smile on someone’s face.”

One of Halil’s proudest moments was being nominated for the Health and Community Services Our Stars Award in 2024. He won the Customer Service Award. “It was an amazing recognition of the work we do here,” he said.

Thyme Out West has quickly become an established spot for both patients and the local community, and as more clinics open at the centre, Halil’s role continues to grow. Looking to the future, he is excited about the possibility of expanding the café’s menu to include even more healthy options, ensuring everyone has something delicious and nutritious to enjoy.

For Halil, it’s not just about food, it’s about creating an experience that leaves people feeling valued and cared for. As the Enid Quenault Centre continues to evolve, he’s ready to be right there at the heart of it all, making a difference one meal at a time.
