Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Recycling is often the default and easier option when choosing sustainable ways of managing waste. However, it’s important to consider reducing waste and reusing what we can, before we start thinking about recycling.

Visitors to La Collette Household Recycling Centre will notice an exciting update that happened during summer 2026 to the onsite artwork. The artwork aims to remind visitors of this waste hierarchy.

The decorative ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ letters on the side of the John Rive building were refurbished as part of a creative and informative collaboration project with local schools. The designs have been reimagined by local students to reflect the many types of waste we as Islanders produce and aims to raise awareness of the importance of reducing the amount of waste we produce, reusing items as well as recycling.

A total of seventeen education providers were involved from across the Island, with each being provided a letter to make their own.

A number of approaches were taken to design each of the letters with some running a competition with learners to design the letter before collecting the materials and decorating the letters. Items were sourced from a number of places including beaches, classrooms and from home. Some of the previous decorative material was reused where possible. The result is a bright and representative display of the waste we produce.

The eighteenth letter was completed by I&E’s Climate Change Engagement team who used pottery and tile deposited at La Collette to create a mosaic. Pottery and tile material is difficult to recycle but some is crushed and used at La Collette to fill the roads on site.

I&E’s Solid Waste team were also involved in the removal of the letters and refurbishment of the bases prior to them being sent out for decorating.

The Household Recycling Centre accepts a greater range of recyclable items as well as larger items that won’t fit in your bin. As it is often busy at the weekend, it is always best to visit early in the mornings or on weekdays!
