As stewards of the community and the environment on this beautiful Island we are fortunate enough to call home, each of us have the opportunity to make meaningful impact. As luck would have it, you do not have to go far to contribute, you can start from the comfort of your own home.
It is no secret that fossil fuel heating systems are a major contributor to Jersey’s carbon emissions, contributing to 14% of the total residential emissions. Despite the growing urgency to decarbonise, it was reported in the 2024 Jersey Opinion and Lifestyle Survey that the most common concern about moving away from fossil fuel heating was the upfront costs of the new heating system and the uncertainty around long-term savings.

“Every home is unique and so is the perfect heating solution. Low-carbon heating systems can be tailored to your property so that you can enjoy warmth and comfort that’s built around your needs.”
Deputy Steve Luce,
Minister for the Environment
And fair enough. In a time of ever creeping inflation, and a stubborn cost-of-living crisis, every household feels the pinch. So why should anyone consider spending their hard-earned money on a low-carbon heating system now?
Because the cost of inaction is rising faster than you think.

Climate change is no longer a distant warning; it is banging on our door. Globally we are seeing more severe weather events such as devastating wildfires and torrential flooding, and summer temperatures are reaching extreme levels. At home in Jersey, we are witnessing rising sea temperatures, eroding shorelines, greenhouse gas emissions and severe weather events of our own.
Islanders, this is your call to action.
And this is where the Low Carbon Heating Incentive steps up to the plate. Aimed at making the switch to a lower carbon alternative, the incentive offers grants of up to £9,000 (£15,000 for low-income qualifying households). The grant covers a significant portion of the cost to replace a fossil fuel heating system with a low-carbon alternative, like an air source heat pump or electric flow boiler.

Beyond the upfront financial support, the long-term economics are in your favour. A heat pump is more efficient at heating your home, cleaner to run, and less vulnerable to the volatile global oil markets.
Let’s be clear: one solution does not fit all. Your home may not be suited or ready for a heat pump yet, and others may not be in a financial position to take advantage of the scheme. But if you are currently looking to replace your heating system, or are planning home upgrades, this is the moment to think long-term.
During a recent visit to local homes that have installed a low-carbon heating system Deputy Steve Luce, Minister for the Environment noted:
“Every home is unique and so is the perfect heating solution. Low-carbon heating systems can be tailored to your property so that you can enjoy warmth and comfort that’s built around your needs.”
The Low Carbon Heating Incentive is a practical step in the right direction that aims to help households future-proof their homes. It is not just a call to switch heating systems though, it is a call to look ahead, to prepare our homes and our Island for the future we know is coming.
