The Vision
The Western Bus Gate is a public realm scheme which will see the installation of a bus gate at the western end of the Esplanade, where it meets La Route de la Liberation and Gloucester Street. The project will run until August 2026.
It aims to:
- give westbound buses a quicker, priority-only route to improve efficiency
- reduce congestion at Castle Street roundabout by redirecting buses along the Esplanade
- slow traffic at the Liberation and Esplanade junction with a raised crossing for pedestrians and cyclists
- improve the area’s look and feel with greenery, a bus shelter and new street furniture at the Western Bus Gate

Previous Phases
Phase 1
Phase 1 will run from 6 October 2025 to January 2026. It involves clearing the site and dig works.
No disruption to traffic is expected and no bus diversions will be in place.
Pedestrians will be able to access all businesses and premises. Cyclists will need to use alternative bike racks – the nearest ones will be at the Esplanade.

Phase 2
Phase 2 will begin with a lane closure on Gloucester Street and will run during February half term, 16 until 20 February, to minimise disruption.
The lane will be closed to allow the removal of the existing kerbs and new kerb.
Pedestrian access is maintained at all times.

Phase 2A
From Saturday 21 February until Wednesday 4 March, the lane closure will be moving from Gloucester Street onto the Esplanade for the next stage of phase 2.
This is to allow the removal of the existing kerbs so new kerbs can be laid with safe working distances.
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
