Skate, Create, Rehabilitate: Building Community Through Boards and Bars

Posted on Categories Community, Tags

Community connections are at the heart of what we do at Connect Me, and we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to society, regardless of their background. This is exactly what happened in a unique project where prisoners teamed up with local artists to give back to the community. The outcome was more than just the creation of skateboards and ramps—it was a meaningful connection that helped break down barriers and foster inclusion.

A Shared Purpose: Building Bridges Through Art and Craft

Community Connector Lucy Blackmore played a key role in bringing this project to life, giving prisoners a chance to make a positive impact on their community. The initiative had two main activities: painting skateboards and building collapsible skateboard ramps.

Working alongside art teacher Lucy Blackmore and printmaker Tim Le Breuilly of Luddite Press, prisoners channelled their creativity into painting and decorating blank skateboards. These custom boards have been donated to Skatespace in St. Ouen, helping provide skateboards to young people who might not otherwise have access to them.

Beyond the skateboards, prisoners also crafted collapsible ramps for Skateboard Jersey. These ramps are now used in pop-up sessions across community sites like Andium Homes and St. Andrew’s Church, offering young people a safe and welcoming space to skate, connect, and hone their skills.

Fostering Community Connection

At Connect Me, we believe that fostering connections across the community is key. This project embodies that by bridging the gap between prisoners and the public, creating a shared sense of purpose. It’s a powerful reminder that prisoners are a part of our society, and by offering them ways to contribute, we can help reduce the social isolation often associated with incarceration.

Through activities like painting, woodworking, and screen printing, prisoners not only built connections with the community but also gained valuable skills for the future. It highlights the idea that everyone, regardless of their past, has something meaningful to contribute.
