Stay up to date with the Western Bus Gate scheme

The Vision

The Western Bus Gate is a public realm scheme which will see the installation of a bus gate at the western end of the Esplanade, where it meets La Route de la Liberation and Gloucester Street.

It aims to:

  • give westbound buses a quicker, priority-only route to improve efficiency
  • reduce congestion at Castle Street roundabout by redirecting buses along the Esplanade
  • slow traffic at the Liberation and Esplanade junction with a raised crossing for pedestrians and cyclists
  • improve the area’s look and feel with greenery, a bus shelter and new street furniture at the Western Bus Gate

Phase 1 Updates

Phase 1 will run from 6 October 2025 to January 2026. It involves clearing the site and dig works.

No disruption to traffic is expected and no bus diversions will be in place.

Pedestrians will be able to access all businesses and premises. Cyclists will need to use alternative bike racks – the nearest ones will be at the Esplanade.

Future Phases

We will provide more information about Phase 2 and Phase 3 when we near the end of completion of Phase 1.

Phase 2 will run between January and April 2026 and involves the extension of the main site with advancements of kerbing, utility works, new slabs and street furniture.

Phase 3 is expected to run between April and August 2026 and involves the installation of lighting, completion of new slabs, street furniture installation, planting and raised table.

There will be a traffic management plan for Phase 2 and 3 as it will require a lane closure for the works to be carried out safely.
