Every day, we rely on infrastructure we rarely stop to think about – the roads that take us to work and school, the pipes that deliver clean drinking water, the drains that prevent flooding, and the sea walls that protect us from the force of the Channel. These are the systems that keep Jersey running smoothly, safeguard our health, and connect our communities.
Much of this infrastructure has served us well for decades, but many parts are now showing their age. Some are nearing capacity, others need modernisation, and all are facing new pressures from climate change, population growth, and environmental challenges. Investing in Jersey is about facing these issues head-on – not patching over problems, but delivering lasting improvements for the next generation.
Smoother, safer and greener roads and transport
Our road network is the Island’s lifeline, supporting everything from school runs to freight deliveries. But too many stretches are worn, congested, or unsafe for pedestrians and cyclists. Through Investing in Jersey, we’ll increase the pace of repairs, prioritise busy and high-risk routes, and make our footpaths and pavements safer and more accessible.
It’s not just about roads for cars – we’re also expanding safe walking and cycling routes across the Island. This means better east-west and north-south corridors, new rural and coastal paths, and more pedestrian-friendly areas in town. These upgrades will give Islanders real alternatives to driving, encouraging healthier lifestyles and reducing environmental impact.
Water, drainage, and wastewater
Jersey’s drainage and wastewater systems were designed for a smaller Island. In many places they’re already under strain, and some homes still aren’t connected to the mains. We’ll be increasing system capacity, upgrading pumping stations, and extending mains drainage to more properties. For water supply, we’re partnering with Jersey Water to expand the mains network so every Island home can access treated drinking water. Tackling PFAS contamination is a priority – we’ll invest in treatment solutions to safeguard water quality now and for the future.
Defending our coastline
As a small Island, the sea is part of our identity – but it’s also a growing risk. Rising sea levels, stronger storms, and erosion threaten homes, businesses, and key infrastructure. We’ll continue renewing and reinforcing our sea defences, focusing first on high-risk areas and ensuring designs are built to withstand future climate challenges.
Fit for purpose Public Buildings
From schools to emergency services, our public buildings play a central role in Island life. But many are outdated and costly to maintain. Investing in Jersey will deliver new homes for children in care, a modern Ambulance and Fire Headquarters, and a rolling programme of school refurbishments – improving safety, energy efficiency, and the quality of services.
A long-term plan for essential services
These investments aren’t quick fixes – they’re part of a planned, coordinated approach that will take place over the next 5-10 years and beyond. The Jersey Capital Investment Fund will protect and sustain the money needed for these works, so they aren’t delayed by short-term budget pressures.
Because the truth is simple: if we want Jersey to thrive, we must take care of the infrastructure that supports our way of life. With Investing in Jersey, we’re committing to do exactly that – now, and for generations to come.
