EYECAN, the charity dedicated to supporting visually impaired islanders, is on a mission to ensure that sight loss is never a barrier to achieving one’s full potential. Through a wide range of support, activities, and social events, EYECAN empowers islanders of all ages to live more independently while navigating the challenges of visual impairment. This drive for inclusivity and empowerment is embodied in the charity’s motto: Together we can.
Under the leadership of CEO Mark Coxshall and the rollout of a new business plan in January 2024, EYECAN has made significant strides in expanding its services. The plan sets the foundation for the next three years, aiming to reach more islanders and cater to their evolving needs. A key aspect of this plan is to actively engage with the community, gather feedback, and adapt services to better support those living with sight loss in Jersey.
One of EYECAN’s recent initiatives, made possible by the Connect Me Grant Scheme, focuses on promoting physical activity for visually impaired individuals. Through a collaboration with Jersey Cheshire Homes, EYECAN now offers swimming sessions that provide a safe, supportive environment for islanders to enjoy an activity that can be challenging to access independently.
Breaking Barriers with Swimming
For many, swimming is a simple joy, but for visually impaired islanders, it can present significant challenges. Public swimming facilities are often difficult to navigate without assistance, which can deter people from participating. Responding to the needs of its members, EYECAN is running swimming sessions every 4–6 weeks at Jersey Cheshire Homes’ accessible swimming pool.
Each session accommodates up to six participants, and both transport and support staff are provided to ensure the experience is comfortable and enjoyable. Experienced staff from Jersey Cheshire Homes are also present in the pool, offering a level of safety and reassurance that has been pivotal for the success of the project.
The impact has already been felt. One participant, who had not been in the water for over 20 years, described the experience as the “best thing she has done in years.” Another member shared how the support from EYECAN and Cheshire Homes staff gave her the confidence to book independent swimming sessions—a testament to the transformative power of this initiative.
Strengthening Collaborations and Communities
The collaboration between EYECAN and Jersey Cheshire Homes is a prime example of how charities can work together to provide meaningful opportunities for islanders. Not only do the visually impaired individuals benefit from increased physical activity, but both charities also gain from the shared resources and partnership. Jersey Cheshire Homes, for instance, benefits from the income generated through the swimming sessions, as well as private bookings made by EYECAN members after attending the group activity.
EYECAN is actively promoting the swimming sessions through home and centre visits, as well as online channels such as social media and monthly newsletters. With over 470 registered members, the charity is eager to ensure that as many individuals as possible can take part in these sessions and enjoy the benefits of physical activity in a safe and supportive environment.
The Connect Me Grant Scheme
The Connect Me Grant Scheme has been instrumental in making this project a reality. The scheme provides valuable resources, including grants and access to the Elementals service directory, which helps third-sector organisations like EYECAN develop partnerships, create new services, and enhance the well-being of Jersey’s community.
By supporting projects like the swimming sessions, the Connect Me scheme not only helps visually impaired islanders lead more active lives but also fosters greater collaboration between local charities, reinforcing the sense of community that lies at the heart of its mission.
Together, EYECAN and Jersey Cheshire Homes are proving that with the right support, islanders can overcome obstacles and enjoy activities that enhance their quality of life—demonstrating, once again, that together, we can.
